Summary

Lee Kuan Yew: One Man’s View of the World -Paperback edition With over 100,000 copies sold in hardcover since its publication in 2013, the geopolitical insights of Singapore’s late founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew are as trenchant and relevant as ever amid the societal and political upheavals of today。 Now released in paperback, the book features a new postscript by The Straits Times editor-at-large Han Fook Kwang, reflecting upon the changes that have unfolded since Lee first made his incisive observations。 Born in 1923, Lee spent a lifetime being intimately involved in international affairs。 He met every major Chinese leader from Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping and hobnobbed with American presidents from Lyndon Johnson to Barack Obama。 In this book, Lee draws on that wealth of experience and depth of insight to offer his views on today’s world and what it might look like in 20 years。

You may not agree with everything but would definitely be inspired by this legendary statesman。 (Even having said that, I find it difficult to rebut those penetrating and realist propositions I found contrary to my own conception。) His candid presentation which eschewed political correctness also brought so much joy to reading this book。

It costs me three months to read it, one hour per day。 There are so many unfamiliar words for me。 But I'm empressed by his frank attitude as a politician。 And many his opinions have proved that he had foreseen what would come for the next decade。 PS: I’m interested in this books because I wacthed some videos in Youtube about his speeches, comments and interviews。 You have to admit that he has that kind of politician’s charisma It costs me three months to read it, one hour per day。 There are so many unfamiliar words for me。 But I'm empressed by his frank attitude as a politician。 And many his opinions have proved that he had foreseen what would come for the next decade。 PS: I’m interested in this books because I wacthed some videos in Youtube about his speeches, comments and interviews。 You have to admit that he has that kind of politician’s charisma 。。。more

The wisdom of Lee Kuan Yew really is timeless, he was probably the greatest leader in the second half of the 20th century and Singapore still benefits today from the foundation that he laid。

Good to read a few years after LKY's death and notice what predictions were correct/on track and what changed dramatically。 I found his views about the European union especially interesting and appreaciated the transcripted dialogue he had with Helmut Schmidt towards the end of the book。 Good to read a few years after LKY's death and notice what predictions were correct/on track and what changed dramatically。 I found his views about the European union especially interesting and appreaciated the transcripted dialogue he had with Helmut Schmidt towards the end of the book。 。。。more

The perspective on the world, circa 2013, from the man that created modern Singapore。 Roughly one chapter per macro area US/Europe/China/etc。Impressive that a single man has such a clear view on the entire world。 Not surprising, since Singapore secret has been to be very good at riding the globalization wave。 But fascinating to discover that behind an apparent miracle lie deep understanding, intelligence, and passion of a leader。This is in my top 1% of books I read。

2nd book by Lee Kuan Yew that I’ve read and it’s as intense as the first。 I thoroughly enjoy reading LKY’s very strong and pragmatic views and I think it’s a great learning resource on what makes/continues to make Singapore a success story amongst its SEA counterparts。 This particular book while written years ago, shows very accurate insight on the different global nations (some prophecies already fulfilled, although I don’t think he could have predicted Trunp becoming the POTUS 😂)。 A recommende 2nd book by Lee Kuan Yew that I’ve read and it’s as intense as the first。 I thoroughly enjoy reading LKY’s very strong and pragmatic views and I think it’s a great learning resource on what makes/continues to make Singapore a success story amongst its SEA counterparts。 This particular book while written years ago, shows very accurate insight on the different global nations (some prophecies already fulfilled, although I don’t think he could have predicted Trunp becoming the POTUS 😂)。 A recommended read if you want to learn about how Singapore fits in amongst its neighbours and the global powers。 。。。more

An insightful and opinionated book。 What I really loved about is it gives you a quick introduction to world politics and history。 And it gives you a perspective of the world when you have none。 It helps you understand why certain countries have certain policies and behave in a certain way。 It also helped me understand the more macro considerations in planning for a nation。Here is a summary of his view on other countries/region: -China - center-oriented regime, no possibility to change that。Europ An insightful and opinionated book。 What I really loved about is it gives you a quick introduction to world politics and history。 And it gives you a perspective of the world when you have none。 It helps you understand why certain countries have certain policies and behave in a certain way。 It also helped me understand the more macro considerations in planning for a nation。Here is a summary of his view on other countries/region: -China - center-oriented regime, no possibility to change that。Europe - fragmented, made worse by the euro currency。US - still the No。1 with the best system。India - Deep in the caste system and difficult to catch up with China。Japan - no sufficient labor, while resistant to immigrants。Indonesia - on the path to a decentralized governance regime。Thailand - the king is has support but hard to say after he passes。Middle East - too many difficulties to overcome 。。。more

Mr Lee was ahead of his time。 The insights he shared and the predictions he made are very close to what is happening today。Simply a genius

Not without his own biases, this book provides a fresh new perspective from a Singaporean perspective, hinting at subtleties that I did not think of or think about。

A crisp, direct and sweeping primer on global geopolitics from one of the greatest statesmen in modern history。 Though written a decade ago, ‘One Man’s View of the World’ remains very relevant - even prescient in places。 LKY explains foreign policy and makes predictions by drawing deeply from history, culture, language, human nature。 The book is a product of his years of experience and careful study of global power dynamics。 It is a compendium of extremely directly written (sometimes quite contr A crisp, direct and sweeping primer on global geopolitics from one of the greatest statesmen in modern history。 Though written a decade ago, ‘One Man’s View of the World’ remains very relevant - even prescient in places。 LKY explains foreign policy and makes predictions by drawing deeply from history, culture, language, human nature。 The book is a product of his years of experience and careful study of global power dynamics。 It is a compendium of extremely directly written (sometimes quite controversial) opinions - but generally quite convincing, given who they come from and how they are laid out。 。。。more

As usual, Lee Kuan Yew is very knowledgable about the world around him, and you can just learn so much by listening to what he says。 This book is special as it is written when he was 90 years old, so it is kind of like his solution manual to all the problems in the world。 Many things that he mentioned in this book still apply to today。

No doubt LKY really is a smart & opinionated statesman - one that bridges the east & west while truly getting the nuances of both。 Don’t agree with everything he says but his emphasis on language, and his theories on the psychology of human societies were fascinating。
